Vineyard Marina Project – Kelowna, BC (2008-14)

The Project

The project is centered on a winery and marina in West Kelowna, British Columbia. Located on picturesque Okanagan Lake, this comprehensive development will include a world-class vineyard, winery, boutique hotel, marina, boardwalk, yacht club and several restaurants.

The Brief

The goal of the project is to develop a destination in the Okanagan that provides a world-class example of true sustainable development in the agro-tourism sector. Sustainability has been a key driver from the project inception and throughout the process. In order to ensure that sustainability goals and objectives were identified and integrated within the development, Archineers produced a Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) at the start of the project.

The Solution

Opportunities are currently being explored for on-site energy generation, re-use of waste materials, grey-water recycling, and passive building design. The marina will feature eco-friendly pump-outs and gas distribution systems, recycled water boat wash facilities, public moorage, and day use docks.

The planning team is currently using the “Living Building Challenge” as its framework for project planning, developed through the International Living Future Institute. Living Buildings are few and far between, but the end goal is to develop such that the project generates all of its own energy with renewable resources, captures and treats all of its water, and operates efficiently and for maximum beauty. The achievement of these goals would certainly add to the uniqueness of a project that is already in a class of its own.

The purpose of the SAP is to set goals and to monitor performance that the design is adding value to the site and the community beyond. It is eagerly anticipated that a step change will be achieved in commercial development, by embracing new technology and implementing measures that clearly demonstrate the benefits of sustainable design, construction and operational practice. The goal of the whole project team is to fully identify the specific impacts and to determine measures that will address and to mitigate the effects such that the site’s ecological value is preserved.

This revised SAP reflects the most up to date sustainability objectives for the Vineyard Marina project, so sets it apart as a leader in sustainable development.
